Continued with wreck research all day today. Again, good experience in researching different types of wreck and what sort of information is available. Bit sad coming across some of the more tragic events such as SS Mendi, this one not just for the loss of life but the reaction of the Captain who was to blame, not making any effort to help with the rescue causing such high loss of life. Searching the web on this one shows just how much interest there can be in such tragedies with numerous researches conducted into the event by South Africans interested in the history.

Started the day by investigating the process involved in becoming a commercial diver. This was for my benefit as well as to produce the wording for a poster on exactly that subject. A useful exercise for both reasons but if the threads in the forums relating to that particular career move are to be believed then the following applies. 1) Make sure you have a relevant skill set out of water before you endulge. 2) Be aware that there is years of 'donkey' work before getting onto the bigger better paid jobs. Given I want to do archaeology masters and PhD part time possibly funded by diving then the full course is not going to benefit me. Lesson learnt.

Had fun trying to recreate stratigraphical archaeological deposits in minature as an exercise for kids to practice archaeological skills and recognise stratigraphic changes. It's safe to say it needs some refinement both in the ingredients of the sand and methods of construction but it wouldn't be summer without playing in the sand. An idea with potential and an interesting educational resource idea.

Finished day off by researching data relating to wrecks of the south coast to aid the database. Important work in terms of understanding which are most likely to provide useful archaeological data, from my limited knowledge this is an area that that is sadly lacking across UK waters. It's interesting to see just how little or how much data is available for different sites and the variation in survival rates of different materials in different stretches of water. Good for exercising the old investigative brain muscles before returning for dissertaion study, if not a little frustrating at times.

Yesterday was my 1st day on placement.
After being shown around the office and stores I completed forms expressing what I hoped to gain from my time at HWTMA. This was useful as I was able to express my aims for my time here.
I am working on the TS Mercury project and as such I was given a copy of the project proposal to read. This allowed me to gain a good understanding of the site, it's likely formation, areas of focus for this excavation season and the questions looking to be answered.
In addition to this we did some straight forward organisation by gathering what equipment was already available and starting to procure those items which were not to hand.

HWTMA Work Experience July 2011 Day Ten

My final day of work experience, arriving at 8:35am I started what I did yesterday all over again, making colour coded backgrounds fit the Jenga pieces, editing photos and changing all their resolutions. I made sure I saved my work every five minutes and when I got up to the 20^th century (which had taken three and a half hours) I wanted to check to see if Corel was being nice to me again. So I saved again, closed down the programme and opened it again from my documents. I was devastated when all that came up was a blank screen! Fortunately though, Julian and Brandon were able to help me locate the file again by loading Corel X5 (which we’d installed earlier) and opening what I’d been doing through that! So if I ever want to access it again I have to do it by first opening Corel X5, then loading it.

Then all five of us in the office (it was a very quiet day today) went to the park for lunch which was lovely because it was sunny and there was a squirrel running around. When I got back in I finished what I was doing and now am feeling quite proud. For the rest of the afternoon I had to type up instructions for the next person to work on developing this game. Whist doing this I realised there was something I still had to do, which was sort out the edited photos so they were saved in the photo file, this took me ¾ of an hour. I then finished the instructions and just as I did Steve came over with some forms I had to fill out.

Before I leave today I will have a meeting with Steve (because Gareth is not here) about my placement. He needs to fill in a form of mine and I think I may need to fill in more. I’ll get some feedback about how I’ve been. Then I hopefully will have all my work in some way so I can access it at home to see what I’ve done. Then I’ll catch the bus home.

Overall, these last two weeks have been really enjoyable and eye opening to the world of work. I've learned loads, had fun and have something I can put on my CV! I've also completed all my targets, which is great! If you are considering doing work experience here then do because it's way better than anywhere else and if you're going to do work experience here I hope my blog has been helpful in telling you what to expect. To finish I would like to say thank you to everyone at the office (especially Gareth) for having me and helping me! You have all been lovely! Thank you!

HWTMA Work Experience July 2011 Day Nine

Today was a bit like my last day because Gareth wouldn't be in tomorrow so I had to say thank you and goodbye which was sad as Gareth has been very helpful and friendly. I arrived at 8:40am but before completing my blog for Wednesday I spoke to Valentine about what colours to use for each layer. She was very keen on using natural soil like colours but as there are 18 layers I thought I would have to use a few unnatural colours otherwise there would be too many browns for people to tell apart (which would be hard especially if they had bad vision).

I had to move computer today because Lauren (the lady who normally uses the computer I was on) was back. Anyway, I experimented with a whole range of different colours, textures and patterns on Corel before deciding on 18 to use. Whilst I was doing this and my blog I had several problems with the new computer so I had to ask Brandon (the diver and IT guy) to help me. Also I'm not keen on the new mouse on this computer although like the double screens. Then throughout the morning and half the afternoon I assigned the backgrounds on the Jenga pieces to colours, edited the images and completely finished all descriptions so the date was included in the dated artefacts description. I had lunch in the park in between which was lovely because it was really sunny and warm. I was pleased with everything I'd done because I'd finished a big part of the project!

But then disaster struck! I'd somehow lost everything I'd done today (except for the document where I'd written which colour belonged to which layer). It might have been me not saving my work (although I don't remember not saving) or the computer messing up but either way I've lost what I did. I was quite annoyed but there was nothing I could do except start again. At least I'd be faster as I knew what I was going to do. Gareth had to leave early so I gave him a thank you card and some Celebrations which were for everybody in the office.

Then I tried to load Corel and start again but it was not responding so I gave it a break for today and began typing up instructions for whoever continues this project after me, to tell them what I've done and what they need to do. After that I typed up this blog and will be leaving in five minutes. I just hope tomorrow I can redo all the work I lost today so I can feel like I've completed something...

HWTMA Work Experience July 2011 Day Eight

I arrived at 8:45am, wrote blog, then all morning I looked for photos, updated the grid and put new photos on Corel. I’d found all objects apart from 3 from the 18^th century (which I had a bit of a grudge against) and 3 from 1800 to 1849. After lunch in the park, I got straight back to work and in the last hour progress went really well, I found all but two photos which Gareth helped me find and now I have all the photos!! I have 54 clear (hopefully) interesting images from the Palaeolithic ear up to the 20^th century. I now need to colour code each layer. Feeling very pleased!

HWTMA Work Experience July 2011 Day Seven

I arrived early again at 8:35am, as usual I did my blog first thing and that took about 3/4 of an hour yesterday! When Gareth arrived (just as I finished) I reminded him about finding the photos from the Maritime-Line. I should explain, this Maritime-Line is just a rectangular poster produced by HWTMA and it's a timeline of Maritime and local history. There are many pictures on it and some I need for the Jenga game. They must be saved somewhere on the computer, we just have to find them. It was quite a busy morning and I worked really hard. I wrote all the descriptions for every photo I had found, re-arranged my grid so it made more sense and updated the Corel programme I made yesterday to fit in with my grid.

Then I had lunch at about 1:00pm before continuing with finding more photos and checking through all the internet sites I'd bookmarked yesterday because they may have been useful in finding artefacts. This afternoon my teacher was supposed to arrive at 2:00pm to check up on me and how my work experience placement was going. At just after 2:00pm the office got a phone call from a lady at the NOC office (in another part of Southampton) saying my teacher had turned up there! It wasn't my teachers fault; she had been given the wrong address by the company my school books work experience through. I also noticed when I discovered this placement that they'd spelled the Wight from 'Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology' wrong, they spelled it 'white' like the colour not 'Wight' like the Isle of Wight.

Anyway, my teacher did get to this office eventually at about 2:30pm. Firstly Gareth spoke to her, then she came over to me and I showed her everything I'd been doing, such as all the descriptions and photos I'd arranged and I also showed her the animation I made. We talked about the Jenga game and the blog and how I was finding the placement. Then she filled in a section of my Work Experience Journal (it's a booklet the school gave everyone in my year to fill in details about where you did work experience, what you did and then three review pages at the back, one for you, one for your teacher and one for your employer).

After my teacher left I continued finding artefacts and writing descriptions for them as well as making not of what website I found them on. I think today was a very successful day and possibly tomorrow I may finish finding photos!!

HWTMA Work Experience July 2011 Day Six

I got to the office at 8:45am today, wrote my blog post as usual and then got straight to work. I was very keen to get more photos today. I started by deleting all unessential photos, then I opened up a new Corel programme and started to arrange all the photos (once they'd been cropped and possibly edited) in the order they would be in the Jenga game. This made it much clearer to see what photos I had and where the gaps were. Then I searched for another 20th century artefact and I found a tobacco tin, which was a Christmas gift to all soldiers from HRH Princess Mary in 1914. the particular tobacco tin I found had been damaged by a German bullet but had saved it's owners life.

Then at about 11:00am or so Gareth came over and we had a long discussion about how I was doing. We went through all the artefacts I had found and the short notes I'd written to say what they were. Gareth liked most of the images but a few were too blurry or not very interesting so he gave me some ideas of what to get instead. We discussed colour coding each layer and how to split the layers when I had to find two for that era. I then went back to work and worked my way up my grid, deleting inappropriate artefacts, changing all the descriptions and checking on the websites I found the images on to see how they were dated. I had lunch again in the office and then continued with this task.

I've got about half way through the grid and hope to finish tomorrow, I've also got to ask Gareth to find the photos I'm using off the Maritime-Line somewhere on the computer. In the afternoon Gareth told me at about 2:00pm tomorrow my teacher would be visiting to see how I was doing. Also before he left I asked whether the date should be mentioned in the description for the undated artefact. So far he said he thought no but I must mention it for the dated artefact. I finished and left at 4:30pm to catch the bus back home, I really want to see this project through and make it a really enjoyable game.

HWTMA Work Experience July 2011 Day Five

I arrived later at 9:00am today as Amanda had told me to. Even so when I arrived there was only one person at the office. After being logged on to my computer I typed up Thursday's blog and loaded up everything I needed for the Jenga game. To start of I edited some more photos as well as sorted through all of those I'd taken until I only had one or two images left for each artefact. This was surprisingly hard as it was difficult to decide which pictures would be recognisable as their object when printed about the size of a postage stamp.

Then I searched the internet again for 18th century and medieval artefacts but had no luck in finding any appropriate. Mid-morning I went over to Gareth to ask for help and he told me not to worry about finding photos for now as I had another task to get on with. I sat down at his desk and he explained to me about a sunken U-boat in the Solent that divers from HWTMA had recently gone down to and taken photos of. In the Maritime Bus there is TV screen and I think Gareth wanted a sort of video showing what it would be like to dive down to the submarine.

Using Google Sketch Up I was to make an animation using the 'scenes' tool to show what a diver would see if he went down there. The model of the U-boat was already made by someone else so Gareth turned it on its side as it is in the water. The idea was that I would match up scenes from the animation to an actual photo taken of the wreck to merge onto the animation and show people what the sub looks like now. At first I thought this task looked quite difficult but once I got going I really enjoyed it. I ate lunch in the office today as it was really cold and windy outside and then continued with my task after lunch. The hardest part was making out from the photos what part of the submarine they were. This was hard because most of the outer shell of the U-boat had eroded away so the photos looked different to the model on Sketch Up and the water was quite murky.

Mid-afternoon I asked Gareth to check what I'd done and he said it was good but suggested a few more photos I could include in it. I did this and then right before I had to go I did a bit more of sorting photos out for the Jenga game then left. I feel like I've only been here a couple of days, not like I'm half way through work experience!

HWTMA Work Experience July 2011 Day Four

As the bus arrived early and it was raining so I walked fast I arrived at the office very early at 8:35am, Amanda was the only one in and she told me to arrive a bit later tomorrow as nobody would be in that early. I got to work on Wednesday's blog post then I organized the grid and brought it up to date. When Gareth arrived he'd brought in some more artefacts for me to photograph and use for the Jenga game. After he'd explained what they all were he told me to photograph them later when the light was better (it was cloudy because it was raining).

So, Gareth had something else for me to be getting on with, he showed me how to use some editing software called Corel DRAW X3 and Corel PHOTO-PAINT. My task was to make sure I could use it and edit some of the photos I took yesterday so they were clearer/brighter/more focused etc. I found the programme very easy to use and it was fun editing the pictures. I edited quite a few photographs and on the screen made them the size they would be on the Jenga blocks so I could see if they were recognizable as the objects that they were.

I had another coffee today and there were several phone calls. By lunch time it had stopped raining so I decided to go to the park again. Then when I got back I set up the camera, tripod and backing cloth before taking the new photographs. The artefacts were: an onion jar, late Iron Age/early Roman black burnish ware pottery, two Bronze Age flint tools and another piece of pottery. I also re photographed the Tudor brick again to see if I could get an image where it looked more like a brick.

After taking the photos I uploaded them onto the computer, edited a few of them, packed the equipment away then left. I'll be back tomorrow!

HWTMA Work Experience July 2011 Day Three

My third day at work, again I caught the bus in and arrived at the office at 8:45am. Firstly I wrote my blog post for Tuesday then I continued with my task of finding photos of artefacts. It might sound easy but I've got 54 images to find and so far I've found 40. Also I've got to find interesting artefacts and try not to repeat myself too often! My internet browsing skills have definitely improved over the last three days.

Gareth arrived at the office between half nine and ten. He made sure I knew what I was doing then left me to it. At first my progress went ok but towards mid-day I slowed down as I was finding it hard to think of images to look for, I was having particular trouble with the medieval period, but luckily Gareth suggested I gave finding photos a break until tomorrow and that this afternoon I photographed the artefacts HWTMA owned. It was a good idea to have as many images as possible that we owned that way we wouldn't need to ask for permission from so many people.

So after lunch in the park (where it was very windy) I returned to the office and Gareth showed me how to use the tripod and fancy camera. I've had no experience with 'proper' photography so Gareth had to go through the basics with me. For the rest of the afternoon I took photos of a plate from 1944, a bullet shell firing case from the Second World War, a Tudor brick, a piece of medieval pottery and a Palaeolithic stone tool. It was very fun and I took lots of pictures.

When I loaded them onto the computer however I thought I could have got the focus better but it was only my first try and on the Jenga blocks the image would be so small that I don't think it would matter. By then it was 4:30 so I left, it's my best friend's birthday today so I'm going round her house (Happy Birthday!) I can't wait for tomorrow and I'm really keen to finish finding those last few photos!

HWTMA Work Experience July 2011 Day Two

Today I arrived by bus, I arrived early at the office at 8:30am and tried the door but it was locked, I then waited in the park until 8:50am when I tried again and was let in. I completed my blog post for Monday then continued working on my task, finding photos of artefacts from relevant ages using the internet. This task was very enjoyable and I felt I progressed steadily throughout the morning. I was kindly offered a coffee mid-morning which was nice.

At 1:00pm I took my lunch break and sat in the park by myself, it was very peaceful. Luckily it only started to rain just as I finished eating so I quickly dashed back into the office for shelter. That was at 1:30pm when I returned to work. Progress was slower but after a chat with Gareth I had a better idea of what photos to look for. Gareth helped me by suggesting different artefacts to look for, for example for the Palaeolithic era he suggested looking for antler or bone tools not just stone ones. I started doing this and made notes on the grid of what to look for so I didn't forget.

At 4:30pm I left in order to catch the bus. Again I had a good day and am looking forward to tomorrow although I am a bit tired.

HWTMA Work Experience July 2011 Day One

Today was my first day of work experience, I arrived at 10:00 am at the office, I'd been there before for an interview but it was still good to be given the guided tour because I'd forgotten some things. Then I was given a quick health and safety talk as well as being introduced to most of the team. Gareth (my supervisor) then gave me a pre-placement questionnaire which I had to fill out. My aims for this placement are to work as part of team and complete all tasks to the best of my ability, to experience a different working environment than school, to learn more about archaeology and to improve my skills in many areas such as: photography, audio recording, web design...

I was then set a research task. Gareth explained using a diagram what stratigraphy was and how archaeologists can roughly tell how old something is depending on how far down in the ground it is. Stratigraphy is the study of stratification - the laying down or depositing of strata/layers/deposits one above the other. I then had to find out a bit more about stratigraphy using a book called: Archaeology, Theories Methods and Practice as well as the internet. About half way through the morning everybody stopped what they were doing and went into the meeting room to sing Gareth happy birthday and give him a cake because it had been his birthday recently. After that I went back to researching and I typed my findings up onto a Word document

This task took me up to lunch at 12:30 pm where I met my mum in Queen's Park literally across the road from the office. At about 1:00 pm I returned, for quarter of an hour I just checked through my research before asking Gareth to explain my task to me. My task: I've got to help develop a Jenga style game that will hopefully explain stratigraphy to the public. So for the rest of the afternoon I made a grid to help me make sure each Jenga piece is assigned a picture of an artefact, and I began to search for possible pictures as well as what time period it is from.

Also, in the afternoon I was given a task by Christin to burn some DVD's. I did this but it was taking too long as I had to keep copying information off the original DVD so after some help from various members of the team we found a quicker method but unfortunately there was not enough time to complete burning all 20 DVD's as Christin had to leave for the Isle of Wight with them early. However she took a laptop with her and I think managed to complete the burning process on the ferry. I then went back to my work.

Gareth had to leave slightly early and I left at 4:30 pm because that was when I had to be picked up. I had a great first day today and am looking forward to tomorrow!

work placement june 2011

My first day of work began by a guided tour of the premises which included a quick view of some of the archaeological finds on site. I then discussed with the work experience manager the areas of maritime archaeology that fascinated me the most so that we could communally find an area of interest for me to base my weeks project on. This concluded to be the preservation of materials under the sea and the natural or man made methods of preservation. Once we had settled on an idea I set to work on selecting four specific topics under the title; 'preservation's: how do we save whats under the sea,' that i could limit my research to. I then used a combination of the Internet, the office library and the staff to collate relevant information to go under each sub title. With all this information collected tomorrow I plan to use the gathered information to begin my A1 'preservation methods' poster design.

Lucy - Work Experience - Day 10 - 16.07.10

This is my last day but yesterday was when I said thank you and goodbye to most people since today there is hardly anyone here. The other work experience guy and Gareth, my supervisor, are not here today. I have finish the review sheets in my blue folder and written a short overall review about my placement here. I have helped Caroline by typing in information about the artefacts in the museum to add things and try and bring the database up to date. I have also extensively researched some locations of accommodation for some of the team who will be diving again in September. Around lunchtime I went on a hunt around a lot of ships around Southampton to look for some things that were required for an activity at the museum in the Isle of Wight, this took a while and in the end we only got one of of teh two needed objects. I have gone through the In Print communication software and finished of my blog. I have enjoyed my time here and it has been really interesting and useful. I hope that I will come back again at some point in the future. There are been good points and some bad points but I have coped well and it has been great. I wish all the luck to the HWTMA for the future and would like to say thank you for the two weeks I have shared with them all.

Lucy - Work Experience - Day 9 - 15.07.10

Today when I arrived I didn't have that much to do. I looked through all my work and files to check the formatting and that I liked them. Amanda managed to have a look over the airlift posters so I made a few changes there. I was then given the task of trying to research about the Junker 88 and the types of things you could do with it such as making a model, posters, activities and footage. I had a chat and filled in a form with Gareth about my placement overall. He said some nice positive things but also gave me some useful information about things I need to remember that will help me in the future. I then wrote down some feedback and a few sentences about my stay here. Tomorrow I will just be finalising everything and going through a few things with Caroline.

Lucy - Work Experience - Day 8 - 14.07.10

Today I had to get up extra early so I could leave home and get a lift down to Portsmouth with my dad. We went to the Wightlink Ferry Terminal but at first no-one was there so I had a hot chocolate and my dad had a coffee in Costa while we waited. After a while the maritime bus arrived and I collected by stuff from the boot of our car then helped to get it set up. There was just three of us - myself, Gareth and the other work experience student. We set up the van and at first we had a few families and some of the terminal workers come over but the day was quite slow. Around lunch time there was about 20 minutes of torrential rain so no-one came to see us. After that there was only one or two other people interested in the bus so we packed away early. It was an alright day since some people did come over and were interested. The other times when there wasn't anybody it was relaxing simply sitting on the bean bags and reading all the books in the bus.

Lucy - Work Experience - Day 7 - 13.07.10

This morning I was really looking forward to my work experience today despite being a little bit late. When I arrived the office was very full since at the beginning nearly everyone was here. I got to work straight away on the posters and the activity sheet which I was making in CorelDRAW. Around 9:30 one of the teachers from school came to have an appointment where he discussed what I had been doing, what I thought of it and if I had any targets. It was nice to see him and he was also really enthusiastic about the maritime bus. Throughout the day I have had numerous checkpoints and conversations with Gareth who is my work experience supervisor who has been helping me. Finally I got them looking good, how I wanted them and all correctly aligned. After this while I was waiting I wrote out a permission letter to send to the relevant owners of the images we want to use but don't own. I have put all of these documents into a PDF version, however these took ages with the posters because they wouldn't all fit. I have backed the up in my own area and on the hard-drive. We will be sending the letters asking permission as an attachment to an email this evening. In the mean time I hope that Amanda who is the boss will read the posters through so that on Thursday we can put them together and hopefully be able to send them to print very soon. Even though I have three days left, I have really enjoyed my time here. Tomorrow I am going to the Wightlink Ferry Terminal in Portsmouth with the maritime bus so I have to get up extra early.

Lucy - Work Experience - Day 6 - 12.07.10

Today has been a really nice day with a great start to the second week. When I arrived there were two people who I hadn't meet before who had been out diving previously which was nice. I discussed with my work experience supervisor about the variety of things I could do which are to create some posters about the airlift and also in spare time perhaps invent some signs for Fort Victoria. I have made two really good, informational, colourful posters to do with teh airlift on a new programme called CorelDraw. This took a while for me to get used to since at first I hated it as it couldn't make it do what I wanted but now I really like it because I'm finding it easier. I have moved desks again today, but to my knowledge I will be here all week. There was another work experience person today as well so now I not the only one. Today was fairly full on with more people in the office, two students and many phone calls but I enjoyed it. Looking forward to tomorrow since my teacher is coming in to check up on me which should be interesting. Also we have finished the cakes that my mum made which everyone enjoyed.

Lucy - Work Experience Day 5 - 09.07.10

Today on Friday we organised the stuff to go in the maritime bus. This included filling the sides of the model drawer with black material which gave a really good effect. After a few car swaps to transport various people and equipment we went to the NOC to take the van over to a history conference at Botley Park Hotel so once we set up, it was quite a long wait and there was only one other exhibitor who was a gentlemen from OCR. We got a free lunch which was really nice but it was so hot, so the shade provided by the van was really good. At the end of lunch we had quite a few people come over to talk to us and they took a few leaflets. After about twenty minutes of this, maybe more, they had all gone back inside. I put together a few packs of different books and leaflets for others to take away and then we packed up again. It was a fairly bizarre day but it was nice to talk to some enthusiastic people and although I didn't do very much it was very nice and relaxing after the busy week. I also got to go home early since it was hot and there was nothing for me to do in the office.

Lucy - Work Experience - Day 4 - 08.07.10

Today when I arrived at the office I had thought I was going to be late only to discover that the building was completely locked up when I tried to open both the back and the front door. After trying to call a few people, I waited inside the bus shelter for about 15 minutes until one of my colleagues came along. I have gone through some of the 'Widget software' pictures with some of the adults here who thought that I had done a good job. At first the tried to guess what the pictures meant since I had deliberately covered up the words. It worked reasonably well so this gave us courage. I then put together a few of the sentence pictures that they like together to print out for use in the maritime bus. They are roughly A5 laminated sheets which have some groovy pictures on it to stick on the outside of the big green drawers. I have also finished, improved, printed and finally laminated 'The Booklet of Artefacts' which will hopefully help those who board the bus but especially volunteers like me. It tells them what there is, the time period and some information about it that I partially found out myself. I think it looks really good although when I first tried the laminator it over-heated ad got stuck. I was going to get my new project today however there were so many phone calls and everyone else was working on there own things. I have been left to my own devices, and despite it being quite a relaxing and easy day I have finished all my tasks. Tomorrow we are going in the bus over to Botley and I'm hoping to bring in some cake as well. I am very tired so I am looking forward to the weekend although I will be busy, it will be a break.

I arrived at the office slightly late today but it was OK. I spent about an hour in the back of the maritime bus trying to measure up every possible length and angle of the model ship drawer. This was to enable originally to see if it would be possible to get a placard in the back however now it is simply going to be covered in dark material. I have worked some more on finalising some of the 'In Print - Widget software' and also on finishing the artefact booklet. Today was a fairly easy day. I also edited my previous blogs and the settings. I mainly improved on my various publications but I also made two more. I spent all afternoon putting together a piece by piece contents list of the different sections of the manual and about what I thought of them. I have also briefly put together a few paragraphs introduction to the maritime bus that others could use. In teh office again tomorrow where I will print the booklet of artefacts.

Today I was supposed to get up at 6am however I only woken up half an hour later. After being driven into Southampton, I arrived at the National Oceanography Centre with plenty of time to spare. We left to drive the big, blue maritime bus to a Porchester junior school. We had to set it up which was quite tricky but it looked really good once we had. It was colourful, interactive, accessible and I think it is quite cool. There were many amazing yet old artefacts that all the children could hold. The youngsters ranged from ages 8 to 11 years old. Most of them were fine but towards the end there were a few trouble makers who kept on actually drawing on each other. During the day I had a wander around the bus myself, answered a few questions, took some pictures of the bus which I am hoping to use in some of my projects and read a few books on the bean bags. Overall it was a really good day though the lunch break was lovely because it was nice and long in which I asked a few questions of the adults. I feel the van is good and I thought that some of the children had some really good ideas. I felt it was a good day although again, I am very exhausted. Back to the office tomorrow.

Today has been my first day of work experience at the Southampton office for the Hampshire and Wight Trust of Maritime Time Archaeology. I arrived at about 9.40am and met a lady who then showed me around the office on a small tour and introduced me to the other workers there. I at first had to fill out a form for them about why I had chosen that placement. I then took a look at the newly constructed model of a shipwrecked collier which I had to create a label for. I was then given two tasks to complete during my time there which were to make an interesting and informational artefacts booket. The other thing was very new and I would be the first one using it. It was a software program that allows you to simplify language into the basic pictures which they would like me to explore, tell the about and create labels and possibly a booklet using it. I also used one of the cameras to take some pictures of the small, yellow submarine sets. Overall I had a really good day despite not eating or drinking anything because I was so busy. However now I am really knackered and dreading having to wake up at 6am for get the van to Porchester tomorrow.

Today is my last day at HWTMA! I've had a really good time doing my work experience here and I will be sad to leave and go back to school. Today I went over to the NOC to help out with some admin stuff in preparation for the dives next week. Then I came back to queens terrace to finish up some various different things i had started during the week. I made a few final adjustments on various documents for the time line and saved them all in the right places. I then filled in a couple of different forms evaluating my time here. It's beeen great doing my work experience here. I have learnt a lot and it has been great fun!

On Wednesday I went to the UAC on the Isle of Wight. I saw where my timeline would go and also helped with some school groups who were visiting the museum. On Thursday I finished up the timeline project. Then I received a brief lesson on flints and then analysed some flint finds from the bouldnor site. On my first day I arrived in the office to a warm welcome. i was shown around and told what my task would be be for the next few days. I have to produce a talking time line, charting the history of the boat for a museum exhibit. The first day I spent researching relevant information online and from books, and then putting it down into writing. This was quite a challenging task as I had to chart all the way from the Palaeolithic to the present day! Today I edited the the paragraphs and trimmed them down so they will be suitable for the voice recording. I have also spent some time working out how the talking tins we will be using work, and how the exhibit will be put together.

I had a great time at the isle of wight but an early start (6:00 wake up, on hythe ferry at 7:10, picked up in southampton at 7:30 TO EARLY!!!)Had some good conversations on the jorneys to the fort. today i went over to the isle of wight. today I had some help creating a test model to see which sized pipe was best their were three different types of pipe.
Large
Medium
small
I found out that the medium sized pipe is better because there is the right amount of space inside the pipe when i use it to move sand one place to another under water.
The larger pipe was to big so it just trapped the sand inside the pipe and the small one was too compact.

Today I began tying up loose ends and also had a chance to use photosynth. Photosynth is software that strings together a collection of photos of an area or object to produce a 3D interactive layout of it. I did thhis process on the office, an apple and a mini ROV. It is required that you take alot of photos that overlap in order for them to synth. This made it tricky and patience was required, however the photosynth of the office seemed to work quite well. This software could be applied to exploring artefacts or wreck as means of survey or an interactive point of a projects database.

The morning was spent uploading the photos taken yesterday of the lithics and organising them by types such as worked flints and burnt flints. To identify burnt flints for example i would look for cracks, rough texture and also presence of white or brown colour on the stone.

Later on I went back to the cold store and photographed the contents of most of the boxes containing samples from the bouldnor clif site. These ranged from clay, soil and sediment samples to lithics, wood and shell fragments. This was to help provide a visual aid to allow the trust to understand what they had stored away and at what status of being analysed these samples were at. Some still required sieving and cleaning, others needed organisng and further preservation.

The day was spent over at the National Oceanographic Centre working with Garry. My task was to help with the organising of samples from the Bouldnor Cliff site, off the Isle of Wight. At first I helped order photos already taken of samples and artefacts including laser imagery of some wood samples. Garry and I then discussed knapping (the chipping of flint) and what signs could be interpreted as proof of workmanship or being burnt.

I then went over to the cold store and photographed a selection of lithics (flints) which required pictures for the Bouldnor database. This gave me the opportunity to handle many different examples of lithics and get to handle 8,000 year old artefacts.

Today I helped Brendon do some research on the Mystery Wreck project in Southampton library. We looked through the records of shipwrecks to find details of the possible boats that the mystery wreck could be. The 1800s was the period of interest. The boats seen as potential candidates were Amity (Built 1822), Arrow (Built 1839), Flowers of Ugie and Hopewell. Some new information on Amity was found, however a trip to the archives in London is requiered to delve deeper into the research.

Today I assisted Gareth in a Stone Age Man exhibit in Winchester. Gareth on selected dates would spend the day at the exhibit in Stone Age costume and demonstrate to visitors tools and methods employed during the Stone Age to aid with survival. Today, I went to a shopping centre in Portsmouth to help with the education and outreach project. It entailed helping run some attractions for passers by which were the mini ROV game and facial reconstruction involving fish tank skull ornaments and play dough. The children engaged really well with games and many adults showed intrest in the Hamphsire and Wight trust and their projects. It was a great chance to help increase awareness of archaeology in the local area.

Today I worked with Garry looking at research, drawings and samples from the Bouldnor Cliff site. This was great chance to get to grips with the operation going on there. Later I was able to work with Garry on the contents of a monolith. A monolith is a tool used to remove a section of earth from below the water and enable archaeologists to work upon it later on in a lab, think of it as creating a miniature dig site. I drew the square of soil and laid out a grid. We then began excavating the first part. Here we found what seemed to be a hazelnut amongst charcoal. Possibly signs of them being roasted at this site. To find organic material I was told is quite rare, making this quite a lucky find. Unfortunately we ran out of time to excavate the rest of the sample.

Today I spent researching the site of Bouldnor Cliff which is off the north-west coast of the Isle of Wight. The site is believed to be a Mesolithic landscape (about 8,000 years ago) and has supplied many exciting finds including the oldest piece of string in Britain, around 11cm long. It is speculated this may be the oldest boat building site in Britain. Later I visited with Caroline an archaeological dig in west Amesbury, Wiltshire. This wasa site run by the Stonehenge Riverside Project which is a 10 year project that started digging in 2006 with 2009 being the last dig year. This was a great opportunity to see a dig in full flow and see samples fresh out of the trench.

The HMS Invincible wreck was introduced to me today, as I first read up on the project and the wreck itself. The wreck was discovered in 1979 and was a multi-purpose warship of colonial naval conflict. Through today I helped work through the Invincible archive and copied into it diver reports from previous underwater excavations. The plan is that the archive will be availible for anyone to check out and explore the wreck and its artefacts from the comfort of their own home.

Today I took part in a ship survey at Warsash in Hamble, Southampton. The wreck was on the shore near a pontoon and yacht club. The ship had already been surveyed in 2001, so this would be a survey to monitor any changes and whether the wreck had need or potential for excavation. It was very muddy round the wreck and if you werent careful of your step, you'd soon find yourself sinking. This made the surveying a bit more of a challenge. I helped to set the baseline and also learnt about off set measurements. It was a great day out and my first ship survey.

Today I continued my research into ROVs and also had a catch up with Gareth on how I was settling in. My research included looking at sites that used ROVs such as Skerki Bank in the western mediterranean and also looking at th technology used such as bathymetry which is where a signal is used to measure the sea bed to create a 3D image. This really opened my eyes to the value of ROVs in maritime archaeology and the advanced technology involved.

Today I visited the HWTMA museum at fort Victoria on the Isle of Wight to help Caroline with holding an event of a mini ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) display which included two games. One was piloting the mini ROV in a tank of water to use a magnet fitted on the front to collect coins at the bottom. While the other game involved piloting the mini ROV in a tank of water under a bridge and to the other side. These games helped to portray the behaviour of an underwater vehicle and also the precision of their movement when submerged. They were also a bit of fun. The kids who visited the museum and took part engaged really well with the activity and most parents couldnt resist giving it a go either. Today helped me understand more about the promotion of archaeology to the public and how it is important to inform people about what is going on locally in terms of archaeology and raise awareness of the HWTMA and their objectives.

Hi there,

I'm Duncan and I am an archaeology student at Nottingham University. I have just done my first year of my degree and this summer am required to do 20 days placement. I chose to apply for a placement with the Hampshire and Wight trust as they were recommended to me through a friend. Today was a casual day of getting to know the staff here a little better and settle into the friendly atmosphere, that I had found evident in the office. I was given a project of researching ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) which are tools employed not only in maritime archaeology but other off shore areas as well. I hope to gain a wide variety of experience from my placement and also meet new, friendly people and come away with a few stories.

03/04/09- Today me and Caroline went into Shirley Primary school, she was on a presentation day kind of thing and i just went along to help. Most of the kids were really kind and welcoming but some were just annoying. The day as a whole went really well, but i did think it was weird being in a staff room. Unfortunutly the film work with the Flips has to be deleted.

This work expierence placement has taught me firstly what it is like working in this area and what maritime archaeology is all about. I enjoyed the relaxing work place and i could see myself working somewhere like this where the people are friendly and i can have a laugh with them and the fact work doesnt have to be boring i can go and explore and do things that i can enjoy.

I just want to say thank you for the chance to be here and i hope the Celebrations show my appericiation!!

26-03-09- Today Brandon took me down to Gosport & Portsmouth. Firstly we went down right on the coast where Steven told us about the archaeology in that area, between the forts and how these were used to defend Britain. After that we went into Gosport and met Brandon's friend in Priddy's Hard and he told us about how all the historic buildings and what had happened to the local area so they cant be protected or exhibited. Then we down to Portsmouth navel docks to look for Brandon's contact, he however forgot about the meeting, so we went around HMS Victory looking for things which had been originals from HMS Invincible or been built based on them. Finally we met Debra in the Victory museum to see if she had any Invincible artifacts, which we took photos of before leaving. I really enjoyed the day as a whole and thought it was really interesting listening to peoples opinions on the local archaeology.

In the afternoon, me and brandon went to meet these uni-students at a wreck site near chichester. The wind was freezing and the Equipment didnt work properly so all we did really was: take photos of the wreck, draw diagrams of it and measure the wreck. Thursday 12th Feb morning - went with Cristin to help with a workshop, i think this went well as the children seemed to enjoy themselves and they asked lots of relevant questions. i also enjoyed it.
Thursday 12th afternoon - continued with diver logs, i added the location of the dives as well.

wed 11th Feb - i researched the guided tours in Southampton, also i have started to transfer the dive logs from paper to the spreadsheet provided - Alum Bay Divers and Dive Times. And after an hour i have got through 5 sheets and there are 49+ left to do so it shuld take me a good 2 days to finish.

Tues 10th - I went out to Winchester City Mill, Bursledon Windmill and Manor Farm Country Park with Caroline and Gareth, i sat in on the meetings however they were a bit boring but this was because i didn't have anything to say and i am not involved in Caroline's and Gareth's project therefore i didn't understand what they were trying to achieve at first but they explained what they needed to do.

Mon, 9Th - Checked through the website for any mistakes, read the annual report of HWTMA. This helped me to familiarise with HWTMA. I sat in on the meeting, this showed me the sort of things businesses have to deal with, and i also found out what everyone is doing at the moment within HWTMA. This will probably help me at school as i am taking business studies as an option for GCSE.
